  1. You can get the individual question and answer on our FAQ page HERE.
  2. 2. If you have additional question or concern that want to be clarified directly by Sifu Lin, we have set up a special place to invite anyone to step in and throw up their genuine concern or confusion. Click Here

Riccardo (Q): Today I have the honor of talking with Sifu Kenneth Lin Xiang Fuk, the Grand Master and founder of Hek Ki Boen (Black Flag Lodge) Wing Chun Kung Fu. Sifu Lin has been practicing martial arts for almost 30 years starting in 1985.

Today we wanted to discuss a situation in which certain individuals have made claims that Sifu Lin is not presenting the true nature of Wing Chun Kung Fu but rather has made up an entire style. This should be an interesting discussion.

Q: Welcome Sifu Lin.

Thank you. It is a great pleasure to be visiting with you again in this lovely setting. As you know, the Hek Ki Boen Or Black Flag Wing Chun has spread worldwide. I look forward to training with all the students and instructors. It is unfortunate, however, that we need to address some of the charges made against me and the HKB system overall. I hope we can clarify our position and dispel some of the misconceptions or allegations made against us but revealing the whole true origin about the origin of Black Flag Wing Chun.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Historical Research of the Wing Chun Style

Q: Let’s start by discussing the rich history and somewhat shrouded origins of the Wing Chun system that you now teach. Can you give us a brief history of the development and evolution of the style?

Yes of course. We know that virtually many Chinese martial arts trace their origins to the Shaolin temple. When Buddhism was brought to China, the monks had a difficult time practicing their mediation due to the physical rigors involved. Martial arts began as both a set of exercises to get the monks into shape and to develop their mental focus. And this that point Martial Arts inside Shaolin temple continue to evolve.
We begin our discussion at the time of the destruction of the Shaolin temple around late 1600. Based on my historical research, I found out that during that time there was an invasion of the Manchurian that started a new dynasty, The Qing. The result of that invasion was that Qing dynasty forces were triumphant. Forces loyal to the generals of the Ming took refuge within the walls of the temple in the southern Shaolin in Fujian.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: Where does Black Flag Wing Chun Come from and what is Black Flag?

Based on my historical research, The “black flag” name, originated from the black flag lodge located in the Fujian province of Southern China. The black flag lodge was either the place or the group located in Fujian for the secret society called the “Tian Di Hui” (Heaven Earth Society). It was established to overthrow the Qing and restore the Ming (dynasties).

Inside the black flag lodge is the hall called the “Hong Hua Ting” (Red Flower Pavilion). This is the place where members would take an oath during certain ceremonies including receiving new members. The origin of Tian Di Hui, based on my research, is that it was established by the surviving five elders of the Shaolin Temple that escaped. Originally there were 18 but the rest were killed.

These five elders went on to create their own lodges in five different provinces. They were:

  1. Cai Dezhong [蔡德忠] created the first, which is the Black Flag lodge, located in Fujian. It was given the title “lodge of blue lotus hall”. According to my research, Black Flag is the most important of the lodges and it takes precedence over the rest of the lodges.
  2. Fang Dahong [方大洪] created the Red Hall lodge in Guangdong. It’s was titled “Hall of the obedience hall”. Its main purpose was to serve up the troops against the Qing army.
  3. Ma Chaoxing [馬超興]founded the yellow or carnation flag in Hunan Provence. The title given was “Hall of Our Queen.” I also discovered that more than likely the survivors of the Ming Imperial family were members of this hall.
  4. Hu Deti [胡德帝] established the White flag lodge in Hunan. Its title was “Hall of the blended heaven.” It may have been more involved in administrative functions such as finding new members.
  5. Li Shigai [李式開] established the Azure flag in Zhejiang Provence. Title given was “Hall of extensive conversion. “ They were responsible for recruiting new members.

These five surviving elders came from the Shaolin temple in Fujian Provence and this is why the Black Flag was the first lodge because it was closest to the old Shaolin temple.

The Shaolin temple was burnt down by the Qing because the temple was used a refugee center for the rebellion. When the Ming generals lost the war in the north against the Qing they headed down to the South and sought refuge there. Coincidentally, my research matches some of the historical research concerning both Wing Chun and Hung Ga, a southern Chinese martial art associated with Jee Sin and Hong Xiguan.

I also discovered that when the Shaolin monks in Fujian, military experts, and local Kung Fu experts met, they trained in the place called “Eng Chun Tim” or “Wing Chun Dim” (Everlasting Spring time Hall=Hope for the future/rebirth of Ming). So I concluded that this so called Weng Chun Tim / Eng Chun Tim was the origin of our style.

On the side note, please don't be confused with other black flag name, in total, there are 4 black flag group in the history of 1700-1940:

  1. Black Flag Lodge of Tian Di Hui Society in Fujian Province [This group is probably what were are related]
  2. Black Flag Army [Hei Qi Hui] in Vietnam, nothing to do with us.
  3. Black Flag Banner of Manchurian 8 banner army in the north, nothing to do with us,
  4. Black Flag Bandit in Nanking after 1930, just some local bandit trying to use black flag name around 1930. Nothing to do with us, our lodge and secret society went dismissed after China become republic in 1910 and the last chief instructor of black flag went to Indonesia in 1907.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: So how is this Wing Chun Dim related to the black flag?

Our art was referred in Indonesia by our elders as Eng Chun [ Hokkian Eng Chun Kok Sut Kak ], meaning Everlasting Springtime [Weng Chun in Cantonese].

Based on my historical research about the origin of Eng Chun/Weng Chun name, my research come across a place called Eng Chun Tim / Weng Chun Dim [Everlasting springtime hall]. Furthermore, we found out that this everlasting springtime is actual the spirit of revolution to restore the Ming Dynasty, In this case, it means hope for the rebirth of Ming.

Speaking of the term “Eng Chun Tim/Wing Chun Dim”, We identified that there are two possibilities for its origin:

  1. If Shaolin, in Southern Fujian, did exist and then the Eng Chun Tim was the hall where all of this started for the revolution [Hope of return of Ming].
  2. I also have an alternate theory that if Shaolin in Fujian did not exist, then the Eng Chun Tim / Weng Chun Dim may not actually be a hall inside Shaolin but rather a place used as a place of the revolution gathering with the spirit of restoring (or rebirth of the springtime which is the Ming). The Eng Chun Tim may be a place where they all got together. Furthermore, I have also discovered that there is a county 97 kilometers from the southern Shaolin Template in Putian, Fujian also called “Eng Chun” or “Wing Chun” [Everlasting springtime]. It is so close to southern Fujian that there is a possibility the name of Eng Chun Tim may refer to that county. It may also have been a deception to mislead the Qing away from the actual location of the black flag lodge.

Based on my research, the Weng Chun County also had a strong concentration of the Tian Di Hui people. In conclusion, It is beyond reasonable doubt that the origin name of Eng Chun/Wing Chun traced back to Weng Chun Tim inside Shaolin[If exist] or Wing Chun County[If Shaolin Fujian did not exist]. Furthermore, I also discovered many manuscripts to confirm this. Here is the LINK.

This Eng Chun Tim originated name also matches when I compared it to the oral history as passed down from my main Sifu, GM The Kang Hay who made it clear the art was referred as Hok Kian Eng Chun Kok Sut Kak[Fujian Wing Chun Kung Fu Family], furthermore, This was also confirmed with the rest of the elders [Direct Students of Kwee King Yang].

The last teacher of Kwee King Yang was the last Cia Fun Tjiao. He was the last chief instructor of the black lodge who fled to Indonesia.

This system was mentioned as “Eng Chun” in Fukinese dialect. We don’t call it “Wing Chun” because we don’t use Cantonese dialect. This has been confirmed not only by just the elders but by multiple other Eng Chun style that came to Indonesia prior to our Black Flag Eng Chun.

This is why I decided to call my style Black Flag Wing Chun because I am referring to the Wing Chun from the Eng Chun Tim as passed down from the Black Flag lodge, which may or may not has a direct link to the Red Boat opera Wing Chun.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: There are people that have the differing opinion that the art from Wing Chun County is actually White Crane.

I know for a fact that White Crane from Weng Chun County [Yong Chun Bai He] had a wide influence in Weng Chun County but for sure, we are not referring to that white crane. Inside Weng Chun county, we discovered that White crane is not the only style practice there. Furthermore, Our researches are referring the name of Weng Chun to Weng Chun Tim not the Yong Chun Bai He.

Within our family, Kwee King Yang had nine teachers. They taught him a number of styles including:

  • White Crane [Pe Ho Kun]
  • Grand Ancestor [Tai Cho Kun]
  • Five Ancestor [Ngo Cho Kun]
  • Black tiger [Hei Hu Quan]
  • Monkey Boxing [Kao Kun]
  • Lo Han Boxing [Lo Han Quan]
  • Bodhidharma Boxing [Tat Chun Kun / Da Zun Quan]
  • Eng Chun ( coming from the Black Flag )

If white crane and Wing Chun is the same thing, then it does NOT make sense because it is referenced as two separate styles by late GM Kwee King Yang.

Additionally, there was a two extremely famous master, Lauw Tjing Tie, from the period around 1800 that came to Indonesia. In his art, he also taught a separate multiple styles such as Tat Chun, Grand Ancestor, White Crane, and Eng Chun (although it’s not exactly the same as that taught by Kwee King Yang).

But based on the fact that he also called out both arts separately it is very clear that there really was an Eng Chun style of its own. Therefore, based on my research, we refer to the Eng Chun Tim that refers to the art from the Eng Chun Tim / Revolution for restoring Ming.

Don't be confused to the other type of Wing Chun comes from the Red Boat Opera which became the mainstream art popularized by Yip Man. That style has nothing to do with us.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Researching the Art

Q: Can you tell us a bit about how you got interested and involved in the Martial Arts and What kind of Kungfu GM Kwee King Yang has?

I began my journey into martial arts in 1985 when I was 10 year old. At the time, I was introduced to my first Sifu, GM The Kang Hay, by my father who had been a student around the 1970’s where at that time since the 70's Kwee King Yang no longer taught therefore only Grand Master The Kang Hay taught in GM Kwee King Yang Bukoan.

I practiced every Wednesday at 4 PM. I lived only 3-4 blocks away from my sifu's restaurant that was also the Bukoan/Studio. The studio was located near the main road. It was within walking distance. My childhood home in Indonesia is now where the Chinese Consulate is located.

Slowly but surely I started to hear about the life story of Kwee King Yang and he how he learned martial arts himself. I found out he had nine different teachers before he started teaching around the late 1920. I found out Cia Fun Tjiao was the last Black Flag teacher and that previously he had had eight teachers himself. The styles he learned from 9 teachers include:

  • Tai Cho – Grand Ancestor
  • Ngo Cho - Five Ancestor
  • Bai He - White Crane
  • Tat Tjun – Boddhidarma
  • Lo Han Quan – Shaolin Fist
  • Hak Fu - Black Tiger.
  • Eng Chun- Black Flag from the Black Flag

From my sifu, I learned the history how Tjia Fun Tjiao was the last chief instructor of the Black Flag Lodge. He left China due to political rivalries among in the secret society between the three splited ideologies between the pro Qing, Birtish, and Ming.

He left for Indonesian to look for his cousin in Malang City who had established a successful business there. At first he could not find him. He went to a restaurant and learned that someone that worked in the restaurant had murdered his cousin. He did not know that before he made his trip, therefore he had not come there for revenge. At bit later, he got cornered by either 8 or 80 people armed with axes. The remarkable part of the story is that he was able to take down all of them without any injuries to them within a very short time. Imagine fighting to many people and still having the skill to not really hurt them. So based on this, I feel that:

(1) There is something very special with the Tjia Fun Tjiao system. This is because it’s easy to hurt people but to neutralize them without injury takes great control.

(2) There is something special about the art from Tjia Fun Tjiao because Kwee King Yang learned from eight different Sifus before that and one of them was, Gui Bok Ki, famous master of Five Ancestor style. But after he met with Tjia Fun Tjiao he never looked for another master implying he found what he was looking for to perfect his Kung Fu.

Kwee King Yang started teaching around late 1920. He had the original five students:

  1. Po Lin
  2. Hok Sing
  3. Hok Jin
  4. Tiauw Jiang
  5. Hu Liang

It is very obvious that The Kung Fu that Kwee King Yang taught was a mix of all of these southern styles mentioned but the “DNA” or soul was the Black Flag [Eng Chun Tim].

Coming to the next generation, most of Kwee King Yang students didn’t teach the same way even though they came from the same source (they interpreted his work differently from the foot work, combat principles and strategies, or use of internal power). This is due to the fact that everyone received a different portion of his original teachings and personal preferences.

This is the point at which I began by investigations and serious research into 3 stages:

  1. Gathering all different variety of Kwee King Yang's teaching from all Kwee King Yang Students that still alive and I had the opportunity to meet to get a complete system of Kwee King Yang.
  2. Researching by directly learning all the styles that Kwee King Yang learned, I approach directly to their kungfu descendant of each of those styles that Kwee King Yang Learned.
  3. Researching the historical Black Flag lodge / Tian Di Hui as well as comparing our art to the modern Wing Chun from Red Boat Opera.

With my Sifu’s permission I started to visit some of these other Sifus and I learned from everyone that was had been taught by Kwee King Yang. My idea was to try to get a Full complete picture of the Kung Fu he taught back then.

Toward the end of my studies, I learned that most of Kwee King Yang students were not into the history of the art and knew only a little bit. However, in general most of them knew from which style Kwee King Yang Mixed Kungfu originated (Five Ancestors, Wing Chun, Monkey Boxing Style, Lo Han Boxing, Bodhidharma Fist, Grand Ancestor and Black Tiger).

Most of Kwee King Yang students don’t know what part is what. They all learned a portion of this mixed Kung Fu. So not only were they uninterested in the history as they're more focused on the training and functionality, they did not even know most the original names of the techniques/movements they were learning.

As a part of the Kwee King Yang family I feel very sad to see this state of affairs because the majority of the King Yang's Students just know, for example, something like “this and that deflection techniques” but there are many types of deflection techniques. They had no vocabulary for most of these pieces.

These techniques do have original names and eventually I found out each by learning from many of them and revived the name of those techniques/movements.

I also discovered around 1965 there was a lot of pressure on the Chinese community in Indonesian because he President Suharto waged a war of propaganda against the Chinese/communists.

Based on Presidential Instruction No 14/1967 (Impress 1419) any Chinese literature, culture, language or characters were banned. Consequently, no one could not talk about not to mention Chinese history let along Kung Fu. This contributed to why that generation did not maintain and passed down the history.

After I hit this brick wall, I could not figure out back then which part were other styles and what was the pure Wing Chun out of Kwee King Yang Kungfu System. So again, with my Sifu’s permission, I started to visit other instructors from OUTSIDE the Kwee King Yang family. I focused on all the styles GM Kwee King Yang ever learned and learn directly to the source[their descendants]

My researches of seeking for the TRUTH was more than just recording on the Video, I personally visited and actually trained at least six months in each this style by becoming their students

  • Grand Ancestor Fist
  • Five Ancestor Fist
  • Tat Chun – Boddhidarma Fist
  • Monkey boxing
  • Lo Han Fist
  • White Crane boxing
  • Black Tiger Boxing

I also looked at the other Fujian Wing Chun version from to make a comparative study [Lauw Tjing Tie/Beh Kang Pin version] and also investigated Southern Southern Tai Chi under Grand Master Lee Tjing Yan. The reason I visited him because he was a close friend of Kwee King Yang.

Last, but not least, I also checked the Cantonese version of Wing Chun from the Red Boat Opera line, including Malaysian Chow Gar Wing Chun and VIKOGA Wing Chun.

As I studied these styles, I came in with an empty cup and even though I was very into in Black Flag art, I really wanted to learn what these other style did so I could differentiate them from each other and eventually discover what parts were the really Wing Chun [Black Flag].

My mission at that time was to research [3 Stages Research] and collect all the Kwee King Yang teachings then REVIVED the Black Flag Wing Chun part by filtering all other non-Black Flag art out to reveal the true Black Flag Wing Chun teachings. Once I had collected all the pieces, I determined that no one person had been given all the pieces but was they were scattered. I then assembled them into a complete system known as Black Flag Wing Chun today.

One of the reasons I was so motivate to learn Wing Chun was because the art was extremely efficient. Something that I later called “maximum efficiency. “ I feel the way we process our power is completely internal as a byproduct whereas the other styles rely on structure or muscle to generate power. I find this aspect to be unique to our Wing Chun.

With that being said, after I collected all the teachings and filtered it and revived it. I created a complete system and continue to improve the teaching methodology until today and I named it as the art from the Black Flag Lodge based on the Eng Chun Tim/Weng Chun Dim. I am more convinced than ever that when we talk about the Wing Chun Dim (Everlasting Spring) as compared to Praise Spring Time). I think that we belong to the Everlasting Springtime family [Weng Chun not Wing Chun].

In conclusion, the name of our name Black Flag Wing Chun is the name of the complete system from Kwee King Yang's Mixed Kungfu that I revived by 3 stages researching, collecting, and filtering only the Black Flag part, into its original parts. To give respect to teaching of Cia Fun Tjiao passed down through of this new system, I decided to call it Black Flag Wing Chun.

Comparing my teaching of black flag Wing Chun system to other teachers within the Kwee King Yang line, they are no longer the same. We have the complete teachings of Black Flag system from Tjia Fun Tjiao through our research, but they only have a few elements mixed along with other elements such as White Crane, Five Ancestor, Grand Ancestor, Black Tiger, and others which we already filtered out in the case with our Black Flag Wing Chun.

In the end, I believe I have an accurate picture what kind of Kung Fu was taught by Cia Fun Tjiao.
Furthermore, in 2011, I presented my idea of the original Teaching of Tjia Fun Tjia's Black Flag to the elders of Kwee King Yang Kungfu family and they are completely happy and support my end result of the Black Flag Wing Chun today.

Kwee King Yang Kung Fu Family

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: What are some of the objections people have to your research and conclusions?

They think that because Kwee King Yang was a master of many arts so that Black Flag Wing Chun is just a mix of these southern styles. For Kwee King Yang's Kungfu style, those are true as mixed style, However, for my black flag wing chun, I was able to filter all of these other styles out.

So this is why, for example, Sifu Tio Tek Kwie, one of my sifu, mentioned to all his students that he was taught, by Kwee King Yang, Song Sui, Pa Kak, Jit Sip Kun, and Thai cho kun forms. However, these forms belong to the Five Ancestor Fist and other Kung Fu system, these does not belong the the original teaching of Tjia Fun Tjiao of Black Flag. It is very clear that what Sifu Tio taught contains a small part of Black Flag and primarily Ancestor fist for the rest.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: What is the 18-Lohan Hand?

18-Lohan Hand part is actually the San Sik training or the separate hands training that we have in our system. In my research I discovered all 18 pieces. Not all instructors[GM Kwee's Student] taught or had every piece. Actually upon my further discovery it’s kind of similar to other Wing Chun styles, like the Gulao Leung Jan Wing Chun 22 San Sik, but they have 22 hands, we have 18 separate hands.

18-Lohan Hand is not a style; it’s just separate hands training and only makes a small part of the entire Black Flag system. Please do Not to be confused with another person who also taught Kwee King Yang's Kungfu, based on his personal preference on the Lohan Boxing, he call his art 18 Lohan hands as well, it has nothing to do with our Black Flag Wing Chun.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: Does Black Flag Wing Chun have a form called the Siu Nim Tao?

No we do not.

Siu Nim Tao [小念头] [Small Mind] and Chum Kiu [尋橋] [Searching the bridge] are not part of Black Flag Wing Chun. The Siu Nim Tao [小念头] was created around the time of the Red Boat Opera period [mid 1800].

We don’t have these two forms of Little Idea [Siu Nim Tao] [小念头] nor Searching the bridge[Chum Kiu] [尋橋].

When I learnt the Vikoga Wing Chun, I learned about the Siu Nim Tao [小念头], I also discovered that 80-90% of the movements actually also exist in the Black Flag system. However, Some Sifus had only a few parts each. For example, One of my sifu, Sifu Tio Tek Kwie only recognized 8 movements.

After learning from many students of Kwee King Yang, I recognized all of them. I liked the way they structured the sequence of movements[Siu nim Tao]. I wanted to have a reference of the alphabet of our system from A to Z. I gathered all these movements from our Black Flag and using a very structured sequence that I like similar to Siu Nim Tao [小念头]to train the basic movements. I called it, in Fukiense, Siauw Liam Dou or Siu Lien Tao [小練頭] in Cantonese meaning first training or little training to train the basic movements as opposed to “small mind”[Siu Nim Tao/小念头]. Small mind Siu Nim Tao[小念头] has a different purpose.

We train, Siu Lien Tao [小練頭][First Training] to learn the basic movements first. The same thing is true for Chum Kiu [尋橋] or searching the bridge. In the Red boat opera WC's Cham Kiu/searching the bridge, some of the movements we recognize them as also existed in our system in pieces however, Most of the movements in our system are not used. For example, we do not have a bong sau with an elbow out.

We use a lot of these similar movements (smilar to red boat's Chum Kiu [尋橋]) to train the Wheel bearing body or Cotton body skill so that we can control the opponent's bridge and destroy it (or “sinking the bridge”).

Based on this I created a systematic sequence that is easy to remember. I called it, the “Tim Kiao” /[沉橋] in Fukiense and Chum Kiu [沉橋]in Cantonese, which means “sinking the bridge”. We never try to search the bridge. We sink it.

In conclusion we do not have these 2 forms of Siu Nim Tao念头] / Chum Kiu [尋橋]. We do have Siu Lien Tao [小練頭]as first training and little training and Tim Kiao / [沉橋] as sinking the bridge.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: Can you tell me the names of the rest of your Sifus? Who were the rest of the Kwee King Yang students?

Answer: In the past, I have mentioned them to a number of people. Everyone knows who are my Sifus. It’s not a secret. However, learning from a painful, past experience, I discovered it is not a good idea to divulge them anymore. Even though I like to give credit to them for source of my learning just like in the past, I had a bad experience and learned my lessons..

Everyone knows that my first and main Sifu was Grant Master The Kang Hay. People know that I also learned from Sifu Tio Tek Kwie and people in my circle actually pretty much know the rest of Kwee King Yang direct and in-direct students that I learned from.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: What was that experience?

In the past we ran into an issue when one of my downline students that had a disagreement with a protocol established in our kungfu organization that I founded, he ended up contacting Sifu Tio Tek Kwie, one of my sifu, and jumped generations and went directly to him. I do not think Sifu Tio was tempted to take him as a student due to an offer. I have a feeling that sifu Tio accepted him because of this compassion and saw this student’s passion to learn the art. This has caused our internal organization and Kung Fu family among the elders in Indonesian. So I do not want a similar issue to arise again. Therefore I refuse going forward to reveal. For a fact I learned from more than 10 and most of them are still alive today.

I want to protect the rest of my sifus [Kwee King Yang's students] so that this does not happen again. I don’t wish the public to think that one of my Sifus can be bought by some offer. On the other hand, I don’t want my Sifu be labeled as someone that created a disharmony in someone else’s organization where they think that they can jump generations, this would create a big insecurity for anyone who come in contact with that sifu of fearing that their downline branch could be stolen.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: What do you mean by “Jumping Generations?”

Jumping Generations means where you go directly and do not give your original Sifu credit for your instruction. Sometimes we learn from our kungfu father and sometimes we can also learn from out Kung Fu Grand Father. For me, I have no problem having my students learn from their grandfather and I have taken some to learn from our Kung Fu grandfathers using the proper channels like I always do in the past and present time. But when they ignore their sifu and jump generation, this causes political issues and insecurities in the organization toward the sifu who accept the jumped student. I also don’t want any of my sifu to be labeled as one who spreads disharmony among my downline fearing that their branch schools could be stolen by one of my sifu.

Going forward, if anyone want to learn the complete Black Flag Wing Chun, it would have to be from me at this time, Especially Black Flag Wing Chun is the result of my research and my years of work to revive it. Moreover, You would not get the complete picture from any of my sifu because They have only have several pieces of the system.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: So you are responsible for the revival of Black Flag?

Yes. I am the only source that collected everything from all the scattered pieces and revived it.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: How do you feel about the slander out there that the same few people are saying that the Black Flag Wing Chun is just a smoke screen and marketing gimmick.

People who don’t understand what marketing is might confuse. But for people that do understand, this is wrong. In the past, no one knew about Black Flag Wing Chun. If I try to use Black Flag as a brand name as it came from all my previous research, it is very hard work to promote. The term, “Black Flag” would be the wrong marketing way to get people’s attention. On the other, Ip Man Wing Chun style for example is very famous. Marketing people would tell you use that brand name instead.

For example, in the world of Pizza, Dominos is the most famous in USA, If I choose to start a new brand called, “Joe Blow Pizza” people would not recognize it and it would be much harder to get the business started until they discovered that is was good.

We built Black Flag Wing Chun from ground zero. The reason Black flag is famous today is because everyone that was exposed to it discovered it was unique, very deep, very good and blew them away. That is why people love it.

The modern public has been fully educated in martial arts through movies and the internet. When selecting a studio or a style, no one cares about its history. They want to learn a particular style because of what it has to offer and how it can benefit them, not where it came from.

There is a big demand for Black Flag, NOT because of the history but because of our hard work develop the skill of our members and have the people experience it. We have a good product. We have a good system. We work very hard to spread it around the world. That is what has put us in our position today. This is the FACT, based on real people, open to the public. Slanders are not fact, those slanders video were created by anonymous keyboard warrior, hiding in the dark, How could be used as truth?

We have a legitimate traceable and verifiable real person in the history, from Kwee King Yang and his students as well as his master, Tjia Fun Tjiao. Thousand of people had interaction with those past masters. Real living amazing people, not some computer generated portrait.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Q: There was an allegations about the formula where somone trying to say Black Flag stole it from their book.

Let me reveal the truth, the original formula of Black Flag Wing Chun came from our Beng Tiam Kao Kuat [點口訣] “Pointers based on Oral Wisdom” that was passed down in pieces through kwee king yang students. I collected all of them and got the complete picture to understand the in-dept of Black Flag system. Formula is the short acronym to refers “Pointers based on Oral Wisdom”

The main formula of Black Flag Wing chun is based on:

1. Inside and Outside Gate theory of Bridging [Outside attack must be bridged inside, Inside attack must be bridged from outside].
2. Two Yin Lines [Border Line between Inside and Outside Gate], Two Yang Lines[End of Outside Gate] and Center Line[Center of Inside Gate].
3. Three Dan Tien [Upper, Mid and Lower Dan Tien]

These defined what we call then nine gates theory.

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Even though this Kao Kuat is from Tjia Fun Tjiao, I still do not dare to claim we are the rightful owner of this formula, WHY? Because there are so many different styles that also use inside and outside gate bridging theory[In reference to 5 line theory], not to mention the 3 dan tien had been used in Taoist cultivation practice in many lineages for thousand of years, even to 12,000 BCE from Mount Gong Dong [Guang Cheng Zi].

On the other hand, I found it very disturbing about this slander that claim, they invented the formula and we stole it, it is almost like saying his grandfather invented English because he was the first one that brought English language in Scotland. So wrong! Furthermore, this person who slanders us also look down on his own art, because he created the impression that their art has no depth / substances that anyone can figure out their art from reading their book's formula.

In the case with black flag wing chun there is no secret, we openly show everything and touch hand with everyone, has real person and picture of our past masters, not some computer-animated-generated picture, it takes long dedication of hard training to master our art. We know that people can not learn our art from DVD or books, not to mention formula. Even when we really teach with full attention and intention from both teacher and student, the mind understand but it takes time for the body to “KNOW”.

In the past, Sifu Lin came across a few members who came from a certain Wing Chun group who believe in secret formula. In Black Flag Wing Chun, there is no so called secret techniques, secret moves nor secret formulas to get real kung Fu Skills. You've seen in the past 5 years, Sifu Lin had been working very hard to dispel the myth of so-called wing chun 'secret formula'. Which is nothing more than basic understanding of right placement and position, commonly used in most southern kung fu.

Origin of Black Flag Wing Chun
Asal Usul Wing Chun Bendera Hitam
Hek Ki Boen Eng Chun Kun – Black Flag Wing Chun

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Didalam kungfu keluarga kami, Mpek Kwee King Yang, mempunyai 9 guru. Kwee King Yang menerima berbagai pelajaran dari bermacam aliran misalnya Bai He, Tai Cho, Ngo Cho, Hek Fu, Kao Kun, Lo Han, Tat Chun.

He [Yong Chun Bai He].

 Black Flag Wing Chun History

Sedikit sejarah Sifu Kenneth Lin

  • Bai He Quan [Bangau putih selatan]

  • Lo Han [Beladiri Shaolin]

  • Hek Fu [Teknik tidak terduga macan hitam]

  • Tat Tjun [Bodhidharma]

  • Eng Chun [Dari bendera hitam]

Kenneth akhirnya menyadari hal tragis tersebut kemungkinan dikarenakan tekanan pemerintah rezim Soeharto dimana unsur budaya Tionghoa dilarang sesuai Instruksi president No 14/1967 (Impress 1419) tentang adanya pelarangan praktek kebudayaan/pendidikan/bahasa Tionghoa.

Wing Chun Bendera Hitam

 Black Flag Wing Chun History
